Over at Poynter.org, Steve Outing has a terrific two part article on what bloggers can learn from journalists and vice versa. His first suggestions to bloggers is to ‘recruit yourself an editor.’ I wonder if anyone at 43 Things is willing to trade editing labor.
Anyway, Steve Outing’s recommendation to bloggers focuses on those who want to report news, but they’re so valuable, I’m going to summarize them here:
-
Find an editor
-
Learn how to research a story
-
Expand your sources
-
Decide on a code of ethics and post it
-
Give anyone you criticize the opportunity to respond
-
Get to the point and use good headlines (MY FAVORITE)
-
Recognize you have an obligation to your readers to be accurate
Pretty honorable stuff. I hope all the bloggers whose work I read will take note.
